What to Expect After Filler
In the final part of our filler series this month, we are talking about what actually happens once you make an appointment for filler.
For many first-time patients, the unknown can be more intimidating than the treatment itself. How should you prepare? Does filler hurt? Will you be swollen afterward? And when will you actually look like yourself again?
At Simply Dermatology, we want patients to know exactly what they are walking into. Treatment should begin with a clear understanding of what you are hoping to improve and a plan that is appropriate for you.
Let’s walk through what happens before, during, and after a filler appointment, including what to expect after filler as your results begin to settle.
Before Filler: It Starts With a Conversation
Before we pick up a syringe, we look at your entire face. Your consultation allows us to understand what you are noticing, what you would like to improve, and—just as importantly—what you do not want to change.
We evaluate your facial anatomy, proportions, movement, areas of volume loss, skin quality, and previous treatments. We may also look at your face from several angles because something that looks balanced from the front can look very different in profile.
Sometimes the area you came in asking about is exactly where we recommend treatment. Other times, we may suggest starting somewhere else or explain why filler is not the best treatment for that particular concern.
If you have previously had filler, let your provider know what was treated, which product was used if you know, and approximately when you received it.
The goal of the consultation is not to decide how many syringes we can use but to create a plan that makes sense for your face.
How Should You Prepare for a Filler Appointment?
There usually is not extensive preparation required for filler, but there are a few things worth discussing with your provider ahead of time.
Let us know about any medications or supplements you take, allergies you have, past injectable treatments, and any recent or upcoming medical or dental appointments. Some medications can make bruising or bleeding more likely, but do not stop taking anything prescribed without first checking with the healthcare professional who prescribed it.
We also recommend really thinking about your schedule. Bruising and swelling are possible after filler, so it is best not to schedule treatment immediately before a wedding, major event, family photos, or anything else where you need to look your best.
What Happens During Filler Treatment?
Once we have a treatment plan, your provider will prepare the area and may mark specific points on the face to guide placement.
Depending on the area and product being used, we may use numbing cream to make the treatment easier. Many hyaluronic acid fillers also contain lidocaine, which helps with comfort during treatment. The depth, amount, technique, and placement vary depending on the area we are injecting.
How Long Does a Filler Appointment Take?
Again, depending on the area being treated, the time will vary. A small treatment in one area may be relatively quick, while facial balancing involving several areas will naturally take longer. We also build time into the appointment for assessment, photographs, preparation, and discussion, not just the injections themselves.
What Will I Look Like Immediately After Filler?
You will usually be able to see a change immediately, but what you see right after treatment is not necessarily your finished result.
There may be swelling, redness, tenderness, or bruising around the injection sites. Some areas, like the lips, can swell more noticeably than others. Swelling can be uneven. One side may temporarily look fuller than the other even when the filler itself has been placed appropriately.
What to Expect After Filler
One of the most common questions we receive is what to expect after filler and when everything will look settled.
Every patient is different, and recovery can vary depending on the product, treatment area, amount injected, and your individual tendency to bruise or swell.
Common temporary reactions can include:
- Swelling
- Bruising
- Redness
- Tenderness
- Mild soreness around the injection sites
- Temporary firmness or small areas that feel different as the filler and surrounding tissue settle
Common filler reactions such as swelling and bruising generally occur shortly after injection and usually resolve within days to weeks.
The result you see on day one should not be treated as your final result.
What Should You Avoid After Filler?
Your provider will give you aftercare instructions based on the specific filler and treatment area.
For dermal filler treatments, your provider may recommend minimizing strenuous exercise, extensive sun or heat exposure, and alcoholic beverages for a short period after treatment because these can contribute to temporary redness, swelling, or itching. You may also be advised to avoid applying makeup for several hours after treatment.
And as tempting as it may be, try not to continually press, massage, or manipulate the treated area unless your injector specifically tells you to do so.
When Does Filler Settle?
Some results are apparent immediately, but swelling can temporarily change how the area looks. As that swelling decreases, the result generally begins to look and feel more natural.
Different treatment areas can also settle differently. Lips, cheeks, chin, and under-eyes are not interchangeable treatments, so we do not expect every patient to follow exactly the same timeline.
When Should You Call the Office?
Most post-filler swelling, bruising, redness, and tenderness are temporary. However, filler is a medical procedure, and there are uncommon but potentially serious complications that require prompt attention.
If something feels unusual or significantly different from the aftercare expectations your provider discussed with you, call us.
Severe or unusual pain, changes in vision, or skin near the treatment area turning white, gray, or blue require immediate medical attention.
Do You Need a Follow-Up?
Follow-up allows us to see the result after the initial swelling has settled and determine whether anything else is appropriate. In some cases, no additional treatment is necessary. In others, we may discuss whether a small adjustment or additional treatment would improve the overall balance.
How Long Will My Filler Last?
Filler is not permanent, but there is no single timeline for how long every filler result lasts.
Longevity can vary based on the product, treatment area, amount used, your anatomy, and individual factors. Different fillers are specifically designed for different areas and have different expected durations.
Think of filler maintenance as individualized rather than assuming you should return on a fixed schedule.
Your Injector Matters Before, During, and After Treatment
Choosing an injector is about more than liking their before-and-after photos.
Filler requires an understanding of facial anatomy, product selection, injection technique, proportion, and potential complications. Your injector should also be willing to tell you when filler is not the right answer or when less product will create a better result.
