Summer Skin Savvy: Dive into the Season with Confidence

However, it’s important to be aware of pool-related skin concerns that can arise from both pool and hot tub use. In this blog post, we’ll explore common pool-related skin conditions and provide valuable skincare tips to help you maintain healthy, radiant skin while enjoying your aquatic adventures.

Understanding Pool-Related Skin Concerns:

Hot Tub Folliculitis

This skin infection occurs when hair follicles become inflamed due to exposure to bacteria or fungi present in poorly maintained pools and hot tubs. To prevent folliculitis, make sure the pools you swim in are properly chlorinated and maintained. Every Summer we see patients presenting with “hot tub folliculitis” at our clinic.

Chlorine-Induced Dryness

Chlorine is commonly used in pools to kill bacteria, but it can also strip your skin of its natural oils, leading to dryness, itching, and irritation. Combat dryness by applying a moisturizer before and after swimming to replenish lost moisture.

Photoallergic Reactions

Certain individuals may develop a rash or allergic reaction when exposed to the combination of sunlight and chemicals found in pool water. Protect your skin by wearing a broad-spectrum sunscreen and considering sun-protective clothing if you’re prone to such reactions.

Pre-Swim Skincare Routine to Prevent Pool-Related Skin Concerns

Hydrate!

Hydrate Your Skin: Before diving into the pool, apply a generous layer of moisturizer to create a barrier between your skin and chlorinated water. Opt for a moisturizer that contains humectants like hyaluronic acid to lock in moisture.

Spending time in the sun and pool can lead to dehydration, which can affect your skin’s health and appearance. Make sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep your skin hydrated from within. Our clinic offers an array of hydrating products and treatments to keep your skin plump, supple, and glowing all summer long.

Protect with Sunscreen

Even if you’re swimming in an indoor pool, UV rays can still penetrate through windows. Apply a water-resistant, broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher to shield your skin from harmful rays. The Simply Dermatology Collection has 3 sunscreen options if you are looking for a dermatologist-approved formula!

Post-Swim Skincare Routine:

Rinse Thoroughly

After your swim, rinse off with fresh water to remove chlorine and other pool chemicals from your skin. Use a gentle cleanser to cleanse away any remaining impurities without stripping your skin of its natural oils.

Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize

Replenish moisture by applying a hydrating moisturizer immediately after rinsing off. Look for ingredients like ceramides and antioxidants to help restore your skin’s barrier function and protect against environmental damage.

Soothe and Repair

If you experience any signs of skin irritation or inflammation, soothe your skin with products containing aloe vera or chamomile. Consider using a topical hydrocortisone cream if needed, but consult with a dermatologist before prolonged use.

Regular Skincare Maintenance:

Maintaining healthy skin during pool season goes beyond pre- and post-swim routines. Incorporate the following into your regular skincare regimen:

Exfoliate

Regular exfoliation helps remove dead skin cells and prevent clogged pores. However, be gentle and avoid over-exfoliating, as it can lead to further dryness and irritation

Moisturize Daily

Keep your skin hydrated throughout the summer by using a lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturizer every day. Look for ingredients like glycerin and ceramides for deep hydration.

Attend to Skin Concerns

If you notice persistent skin issues like acne breakouts or excessive dryness, consult a dermatologist who can recommend targeted treatments or adjustments to your skincare routine.
