What are Facial Fillers?

Facial fillers are also known as dermal fillers and are composed of either hyaluronic acid or poly-L lactic acid. Like Botox they are used to prevent or decrease signs of aging by softening fine facial lines and wrinkles. While Botox does so by reducing the activity of muscles in the face that cause wrinkles, Facial fillers “fill in” the trouble areas and add volume to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Injectable dermal fillers are a minimally-invasive way of temporarily restoring the youthful appearance to a patient’s face, especially around the eyes, lips, nose mouth and cheeks. The aging process causes a loss of volume throughout the face, resulting in a hollowed appearance that can make you look older.

In the hands of a skilled cosmetic dermatologist, dermal fillers such as Restylane, Juvederm, Radiesse, and Sculptra can be used to plump out those hollowed places. All fillers are not the same though and each is used for different areas of the face. Some fillers such as Juvederm are made of hyaluronic acid, whereas Sculptra is made of poly-L lactic acid that causes your body to produce its own natural collagen to achieve plumpness.

Instead of just smoothing or tightening skin, an injectable filler aims to rejuvenate the facial profile. The injection of filler materials under the skin can fill in deep folds, such as nasolabial folds (also called “smile lines” or “parenthesis”, running from the corner of the nose to the corner of the mouth), create fuller lips and fill out hollow cheeks and eyes.

How long do fillers last?

Hyaluronic acid fillers last from six months up to 2 years, depending on the quantity and formula used, whereas synthetic fillers such as Radiesse 12 to 18 months.

How much time is the treatment session?

Depending on the area of the face anywhere from 15 minutes to 1 hour.

Do fillers hurt?

The pain will vary depending on the patient and the area being injected. In places like the nasolabial area there may be a slight short-term burning. Anesthetic is generally used for the lips.
